Project Smile South Africa
Project Smile South Africa aims at encouraging creativity, innovation and adventurous works of art production among the youth. Project Smile South Africa is the brainchild of MM Galleries, an art gallery which offers a platform and window of opportunity to young and upcoming artists to showcase their works.
Project Smile South Africa will involve promoting the works of mainly young and upcoming artists. “Smile” is the theme of the project and all works will be designed and crafted cantering around this theme. Smile drawings and impressions will be artistically designed and put on photographs, paper, sportsman’s t-shirts, builders’ tiles, glass, sculpture, plates and clothing. The “Smile” picture or impression will be accompanied by autographs of famous people. Theses will be auctioned and sold at equally competitive prices.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES & BENEFITS:
The main aim of the project is to raise funds for Operation Smile South Africa by creating a platform at the MM Galleries art gallery through which young and gifted artists showcase their wealth of talents. The other objectives of the project are:
To assist upcoming young artists with marketing and promoting their works;
To promote and showcase various talents in the Cape region of South Africa
To empower historically disadvantaged sections of the society
To contribute to the economy through creation of meaningful employment and purposeful activity.
OPERATION SMILE SOUTH AFRICA Operation Smile South Africa is a non-profit medical services organization that provides free surgery and related follow-up care to children and adults with cleft lips and cleft palates in South Africa and in the Southern African region.
PROJECT SMILE SOUTH AFRICA COMPETITION
To encourage participation in the project, the Project is commencing jointly with the Project Smile South Africa Competition. To enter the competition, please send your work of art with the “smile” theme to the MM Galleries art gallery at Shop 3, 31 Palmer Road in Muizenberg, Cape Town or via email and snail mail or alternatively at your institution. The first annual gala will be held on the 19th of June 2010 at a venue to be confirmed at a later date.
Entries to the competition will commence on the 26th of January 2010 and close on the 21st of May 2010. The top three entries will be selected by patrons visiting MM Gallery Muizenberg during the smiles exhibition, Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, winners will afforded an opportunity to participate in a pottery workshop at the renowned Fiddlewood studio in Claremont Cape Town. During the gala event the higher profile smiles will be auctioned and selected smiles given as incentive to patrons who would have purchased and attended the first gala event.
